Welcome to Choosing Light.
The inspiration for this blog came from a number of different sources. First, the book A Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes, inspired me to try my own “year of yes.” While I don’t expect mine will be as exciting as hers (I’m not expecting a call from Dartmouth College or Jimmy Kimmel!) I do think it might be a little bit more relatable for the average random person who just wants to make their lives a little less “safe” (read: boring!)
Also from that book, Shonda talks about playing in the pantry … and stepping out from that safe place to experience the light of the world, thus, my title: “Choosing Light.”
And then there’s the quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” In today’s political climate, I think that quote is more relevant than ever. I am a big believer in equal rights and equal love for all. Love and kindness are the light that can drive out the darkness. Again, I choose light.
Finally, another source of inspiration came in this quote from Thomas Aquinas, “Better to illuminate than merely to shine, to deliver to others contemplated truths than merely to contemplate.” He encourages me to think that others might find some value in my thoughts and words. Not sure how delusional that makes me, but, in the spirit of “yes,” I’ll give it a try!
The one thing I won’t say “yes” to is plagiarism. All text content on the pages of this blog is copyright protected. You may share anything you find here, but only if you also share proper credit and reference your source. Thanks for understanding and respecting that. It feels narcissistic to even say that. Who am I to think that someone will find what I write even worthy of stealing? But it stands nonetheless, just in case.
I’m not entirely sure what direction this blog will take yet. My intent, for now, is to share experiences, musings, and reflections and hope they’re worth reading. Odds are probably 50/50 on that, but thanks for giving it a try!
